Driving from Perlis to Johor in an all-electric car - How long would it take?

The first BMW all-electric vehicle was launched in 2013. This marked a historic feat by BMW, being the first mass-produced zero-emissions vehicle launched as part of BMW's electric vehicle BMW i sub-brand. A multiple World Car of the Year Award recipient, the i3 has set standards worldwide as a benchmark of innovation, and is one of the top-selling electric cars globally.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to travel long distance in an electric vehicle? How many stops would you have to make, and the travel time required?

We’ve made a theoretical journey from the northernmost of Malaysia - Padang Besar, Perlis all the way the southernmost next to the Singaporean border – Johor Bahru. Our journey would take us through over 800km, and would need several stops to recharge the 42.2 kWh (output) and 120 Ah (capacity) battery. Since this is fully theoretical - we will not be taking any time to rest, eat and of course – no bathroom breaks!

Go!

With a full charge, we leave Padang Besar at 12:00 midnight immediately heading south. The standard range for the i3s, and while it provides a top speed of 160 km/h, this theoretical journey will be kept strictly within speed limits.

After 3 hours of driving, we arrive at our first stop – Taiping, Perak. Its time to recharge the battery using the 11-kW onboard AC charger and a Type 2 connection - which will take 15 hours.

Its 6pm the next day, and off we go to continue our journey. From Taiping, we zip by Perak and Pahang to our second stop – Sungai Buloh, Selangor. After 3 hours driving, we stop to recharge the car for another 15 hours before taking another 2 and a half hours drive to Yong Peng, Johor. It’s our final cycle before our final journey to Johor Bharu.

After making the final drive, we would have taken an amazing journey through Malaysia, passing through 9 states in a span of 54 hours. While it might sound rather long, we’ve had zero fuel consumption, while releasing zero CO2 emissions.

As they say – It's about the journey, not the destination.
